Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

Microsuction is widely recognised as the safest, fastest and most precise method for removing excess ear wax. Unlike traditional syringing or irrigation, microsuction is a completely dry procedure, meaning no water is introduced into the ear canal. This makes it suitable for a wide range of clients, including those with sensitive ears, a history of infections, or previous issues with their eardrums.

What Is Microsuction?

Microsuction involves the use of a low-pressure medical suction device and a high-magnification viewing system to gently remove ear wax and debris. The clinician maintains full visibility throughout the procedure, allowing for controlled and accurate removal.

Why Choose Microsuction?

Microsuction is considered the preferred method because it is:
Safe – No water pressure, reducing risk of complications
Precise – Direct visual guidance ensures accurate removal
Comfortable – Most people feel only light suction or mild noise
Fast – The procedure usually takes only a few minutes
Suitable for Most Clients – Including those with perforated eardrums, narrow ear canals or recurring wax issues

Who Is Microsuction Recommended For?

Microsuction is particularly beneficial for people who:
• Experience frequent or stubborn ear wax build-up
• Have had previous ear infections
• Prefer a dry, non-invasive method
• Need immediate relief from blockage, hearing loss or discomfort
• Have medical conditions that prevent the use of water-based treatments

Ear Irrigation

Ear irrigation is a safe and effective method used to remove softer or loose ear wax using warm water. This technique gently flushes the ear canal, clearing wax build-up and restoring natural hearing clarity. It is a commonly used procedure for clients whose ears are healthy and suitable for water-based treatment.

What Is Ear Irrigation?

Ear irrigation involves introducing a controlled stream of body-temperature water into the ear canal to dislodge and wash out wax. Modern irrigation systems ensure even pressure, reducing discomfort and providing a smooth, gentle cleaning process.

Why Choose Irrigation?

Ear irrigation is often recommended because it is:
Gentle – Warm water helps soften and remove wax comfortably
Effective – Ideal for softer, moist or partly mobile wax
Non-invasive – Uses a natural flushing action rather than suction
Quick – Most appointments take only a few minutes per ear

Who Is Irrigation Suitable For?

Irrigation is appropriate for clients who:
• Have soft or recently-formed wax
• Have no history of perforated eardrums
• Have healthy ear canals free from infection
• Prefer a water-based, gentle flushing method
• Need relief from blockages, crackling sounds or hearing loss caused by wax

What to Expect During the Procedure

1. Initial Ear Assessment

  • A full inspection of the ear using an otoscope or endoscope.

2 . Explanation of Findings

  • A full inspection of the ear using an otoscope or endoscope.

3. Wax Removal

  • A fine suction tip is gently inserted to remove wax while the ear canal is monitored in real time.

4 . Post-Treatment Check

  • The ear is re-examined to confirm all wax has been removed and the eardrum is healthy.

5. Video Recording of Your Ear Procedure

  • Procedure inside your ear can be video recorded for you and sent to your phone if preferred.

FAQs

anything

Yes, for the best results and an easier removal process, we recommend softening the earwax beforehand. Simply apply a few drops of olive oil (or any over-the-counter ear drops) into each ear 3 times a day for at least 1–2 days prior to your appointment. This helps loosen the wax and often makes the procedure quicker and more comfortable.

Common symptoms include muffled hearing, ear fullness or blockage, earache, tinnitus (ringing), itchiness, dizziness, or a feeling of pressure in the ear.

Most appointments take 15–30 minutes (including consultation and both ears if needed).

Yes, we safely treat children from around age 4 upwards. We use child-friendly techniques and extra patience to keep them comfortable.

It’s common to feel the ears are “too open” or hear sounds more loudly for a few hours after removal – this is normal and settles quickly.

Use 2–3 drops of olive oil or medical-grade ear drops once or twice a week, avoid cotton buds, and have regular check-ups if you’re prone to wax proble
